There is much manufactured debate about whether God and science are compatible. When all things are considered, it is a strange question born of a civilization that has had God for so long, they have forgotten what things are like without him. The Western World’s success may be from many factors, but one underlying belief has given it the legs it stands upon. Christianity has made the West, including Western science.

22 While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.”

Genesis 8:22

This passage is part of God’s covenant with Noah where he promises to uphold the laws of nature. When pagans assume time is a circle and repeating and all is chaos, they are looking at a direct sign of God’s goodness and spitting in his face.

The very concept of the laws of nature stems from premises like these, that there is a God who created and upholds the world. Like how we see laws created by sovereigns, the sovereign creator of all things has placed laws in the world he made.

17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Colossians 1:17

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3

John 1:1-2

In the above we see Jesus is credited with the work of creating and upholding the universe together. This also means that Jesus is the same God (and maybe person) who promised Noah he would uphold the seasons. We see God is not far a simple clockmaker who creates then removes himself from the universe. God is very active in every motion within the universe.

“For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.
Malachi 3:6

But You remain the same, and Your years will never end

Psalm 102:27

What unbelievers like JD Unwin found was that without such a God, the advances of civilization stopped. Societies that abandoned the view of a God in control fell apart quickly, and only Christian civilization has reached such tremendous heights as we experience. Without a constant unchanging God, nothing is truly knowable because nothing is constant.

The idea that the two are opposed one to another was an intentional propaganda campaign by men like Andrew Dickson White and John William Draper. The intention was to replace the clergy with a new priesthood of “unbiased” scientists. Such is laughable as most scientist’s clergy or not before did so out of their faith in the Christian God (orthodox or not). Joanathan Edwards himself performed a study on how spiders build their webs that is still in use today, and Francis Bacon was a devout Anglican of alleged Puritan extraction. But these are ignored or outright denied not for lack of evidence, but because of it.

Don’t be surprised we live in an era of Hegelian Pseudo-science. With the rejection of God we began to think we could overcome the laws of nature in places like economics, or more recently in back in vogue, in biology. A society that rejects God rejects reason, and calls girls boys and boys girls while denying the existence of both.

The faithful and unchanging Lord of creation makes the world predictable. It is only upon this basis that we can have the material blessings we enjoyed for so long. Without the concept of our eternal, unchanging and ever faithful God in control of the universe all that is left is chaos.
